University of Waterloo Badminton Club (UWBC) depends on its execs to maintain operations and services for the general members. Without the execs, there would be no club.
Data shows:
This is a completely voluntary position but critical to club operations. And fewer execs were returning to the club. There’s many possible reasons and some of them are out of our control.
I wanted to help make the exec experience as positive and as welcoming as possible.
Teams - Putting execs into small teams helped to quickly establish mentors and support structure. They also gained a sense of identify by creating their own team name and logo.
Points - Basic form of currency. We used Google Forms to track who earned how many points for what.
Badges - This helped execs understand how they can earn points. Categories included: creativity, enthusiasm, event helper, mentoring, and initiaitve.
Competition - We hosted competitive events (ex. relay race, game show, pumpkin carving contest, etc.) as team building exercises with points up for grabs.
Rewards - Finally, hard-earned points were converted into rewards (mainly bubble tea and food).
This project was initiated out of self-interest. What started out as friendly competition to motivate execs, turned into investigating a serious underlying issue we had.
I was responsible for concept creation, graphic design, creating new team challenges, and managing logistics. All of the directors helped record scores, organize team events, and mentor their assigned execs. Thanks to Ahmed for helping maintain our static leaderboard throughout the terms.
